Mental
and behavioural problems are common and affect every society. Effectiveness
of some interventions for these conditions already exists, but has
never been brought together for those with a specific interest in
the area be they, for instance, psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists,
child neurologists, paediatricians, specialists in other medical
fields, general practitioners, policy makers, or consumers. The
EU-PSI Project was developed to address the lack of readily available
evidence for efficient management of mental health care. It was
a three year project funded under the European Union's Quality
of Life and Management of Living Resources initiative.
The following centres participated:
Department of Epidemiology ASL RME, Rome, Italy;
Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK;
Technische Universitt M nchen, Munich, Germany;
University of Bristol, Bristol, UK;
University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland;
University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece;
University of Leeds, Leeds, UK;
University of Oxford, Oxford, UK;
University of York, York, UK;
Update Software Ltd, Oxford, UK.
Five Cochrane Collaborative Review Groups were involved:
Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group
Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Review Group
Developmental, Psychosocial and Learning Problems Group
Cochrane Drugs and Alcohol Group
Schizophrenia Group
The specialised registers from these five Collaborative Review
Groups were pooled to create a unique, comprehensive database of
published and unpublished trials of treatments for mental and behavioural
problems, the
PsiTri database. The project also produced the Mental
Health Library, which includes the PsiTri database, Cochrane
Systematic Reviews, other appraisals of high quality research evidence,
and evidence-based guidelines in mental health.
